Robert Roddam was a British naval officer who rose through the ranks from midshipman to Admiral of the red. He was born in 1719 on his family's ancestral estate, and entered the navy in 1735. He served on board several ships in various parts of the world, taking part in many engagements, and was promoted to lieutenant and then captain.
